Avoca provide bespoke data integration solution for Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust

Avoca helped Trafford build an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) by providing a bespoke live data integration solution to connect the Trust’s disparate clinical departmental systems.

The solution provided point-to-point interfaces between the departmental systems and an Enterprise Master Patient Index (EPMI), also supplied by Avoca. The departmental systems included Telepath (pathology), Exeter (GP), UltraGenda (scheduling), Ormis (theatre management), casenotes, CRIS (radiology) and Irisoft (colposcopy).

Avoca worked closely with Trafford throughout, via consultation sessions that allowed the Trust to have active input into the design of the solution. The result was a feasible integration strategy that Trafford were confident would work effectively for them. This clear understanding between Avoca and their client ensured that the solution fully met the Trust’s requirements.

Avoca’s integration consultants were vital to the success of the project, providing experience with a wide range of integration tools and techniques. Trafford’s EPR solution was achieved using a number of technologies including Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft BizTalk, HL7 messaging and Microsoft Message Queues.

The solution also empowered Trust personnel to manage poor data quality and data inconsistencies, both in the EPMI and in the integrated departmental systems. Duplicate patient records were cleansed using the same technology behind Avoca’s Data Synthesis identity management tool. Avoca provided bespoke identity-matching rules to locate fragmented and duplicated patient records, and designed a robust messaging service to apply these rules within the EPR solution. As a result, patient records were rapidly matched, merged and removed using minimal human resource.

Following on from this success, Trafford asked Avoca to provide long-term remote helpdesk support. Avoca’s helpdesk support team provided rapid issue resolution that minimised service disruption for the Trust.
